The pads are ideal for making hip hop and rap patterns and it is a heck akai mpd16 a lot more fun making beats on this thing compared to tiny drum machine pads or a keyboard. So I’d suggest not doing either of the above.
I’d stay away from Mpd. The pad sensitivity is night and day difference. It is not a sampler or a akai mpd16 machine: I’d go with padKontrol in a heartbeat over MPD. I wasn’t sure if the mpk mini was “good akai mpd16 alone to help me produce some cool stuff. Just hold down a button 2 seconds and tap in the number on the pads.
Let the thumbs do the kiks in the bottom row of pads and let akai mpd16 fingers to the hats and snare in the next row. This set the velocity of every pad tono matter how soft or hard you hit the pad.

As for software, I only have Garageband at the moment. I’d recommend you get the maschine. The USB connection is great here–just akai mpd16 cable and its all ready to go. There is very little documentation on the Akai site.
